Jus Rol do a range of ready to use pastry that is dairy free. Wonderful in all cooking. They also do gluten free.
We think Sainsbury’s gluten free pasta is the best out there
Organ Egg Replacer – great in baking, and makes wonderful meringues
Plamil Vegan Mayonnaise is great, not too runny
Vegan Cheese – Go for Violife hard cheeses and cream cheese, Sainsbury’s is pretty good too.
If you are after melting mozzarella go for Daiya – really good on pizza
Dairy Free Cooking Tips
We love Vitalite’s taste and think it’s the best dairy free margarine around, but Pure and Flora are also good.
Oatly Cream and Creme Fraiche are great in sauces and mashed potato
Koko Coconut Milk is our favourite substitute in smoothies and porridge
Waitrose Coconut yoghurt is wonderful, but Coyo and Coconut Collaborative are great too.
Egg Free Baking Substitutes
1/2 ripe banana gives great body in cakes as well as moisture
1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce is also good for texture and moisture
2 tsp baking powder plus 1 tsp apple cider vinegar gives lift
1 tbsp flaxseed meal plus 3 tablespoons water for binding (not my favourite as I don’t like the consistency)
1/4 cup fine oats for binding (good in burgers and meatballs)
Gluten Free Tips
There are a lot of great flours out there, no need to mix your own. We love Dove Farm.
Watch out for Soya Sauce and Baking Powder. You can find Gluten Free versions in most supermarkets
Xanthan Gum is a great stabiliser in baking, and thickener
Corn Starch is a good Gluten Free thickener
Gluten Free baking doesn’t stay as fresh as long, so eat it quick, or freeze as you go
